Brief Description:  First Flight

Pierre Smith came to Barnwell today to do the maiden flight on N947CB. Pierre is a CFI and a Turbo Air Tractor crop duster with a zillion hours. He also was the guy who did my RV transition training in his RV 6 and RV 10.

After 3 years of hard work, I decided I could forgo doing the maiden flight test and use an expert to protect my investment. To that end I recruited Pierre to do the job and insured him on the plane with me. It was a thrilling day even though I wasn’t the pilot.

Ed Booth flew over in his RV 7 to be the chase plane and I rode with him. N947CB took to the air so quickly we could barely keep up. Pierre climbed to altitude, tested the trim, slow flight and we did air speed checks between the two planes. All went well, but there were a few gremlins. The aileron trim could not hold a right heavy wing and was wired backwards. The airspeeds were off as can be expected before calibration. Also after landing we found a oil leak that needed attention. Pierre landed the plane with barely a squeak, and thought she flew just great. I will take her up next after fixing the issues noted. It was one happy day, and I’m looking forward to my first flight this week
