Brief Description:  Drilled Hole in Rudder Horns

I pulled the Horizontal Stab and Elevators down from the wall. I dug out the drill bushing I order from McMaster-Carr years ago and prepared to drill the elevator horns. After clamping the counterbalance weights to the tips of the stab, I determined that the left horn was aft of the right horn. I removed the left elevator per the instructions, marked a #30 pilot hole and drilled. I reattached the elevator (gotta love those pins I got from Avery Tools) and grabbed the bushing-only to discover that it is a #40! I got the idea from someone else's build log years ago and I don't know if the plans have changed or if they drilled a #40 pilot hole. I put the $10 chunk of metal away and got a piece of wood from the scrap pile (never throw anything away). The distance between my rudder horns measured .875" so I cut the block to 7/8" and drilled a #30 hole through it using my drill press to ensure that it was perpindicular to the sides. I slid the block between the elevator horns and drilled through the right horn using the block as a guide. I could then remove the block and final drill the two hole to #12. I placed the elevator on the fuse assembly and then fabricated the two F-798 shims from aluminum bar. I spent more time looking for the bar then I did fabricating the shims. I shot a quick coat of Napa 7220 on them and went inside to cool off. I never made it back to the garage! Maybe I can get it drilled and attached tomorrow.
