Brief Description:  Made the Big Cut

Somehow, I managed to coerce Joe and Pete to come over today to cut the canopy. While waiting for them to arrive, I began to mark the lower rudder cap for the tail light ring. After I drilled the second hole (7 o'clock position in the pic), I decided I wanted to move the ring slightly. I drilled the remaining holes and will epoxy and then redrill the "off" hole. After Joe arrived, I grabbed Pat while he was out walking his dog and we were off to the races. Joe remarked the cut line aft of the line that Pete and I drew earlier in the week. This would give us more adjustment in cutting/placing the forward portion of the canopy as the aft portion has plenty of excess. We moved the canopy out into the sun and placed it on sawhorses in the drive. Blocks of wood clamped to the sawhorses prevented the canopy from spreading. Joe had placed two strips of masking tape along the cut line with the width of the cutting blade between them. Unfortunately, I don't have a 90 degree attachment on my Rotozip so I had to stand parallel to the cut. I had more than a few nervous moments when I would get the cutting blade off line while cutting. Joe and Pat were very positive and after what felt like an eternity, we turned one canopy into two pieces. We dressed the cut edges with some sandpaper and then went to lunch with our wives. After lunch, Ginger and I went down to the airpark to check out Joe and Pam's beautiful new home. They designed it themselves and it is VERY nice. Joe gave me some weatherstripping, aluminum angle, and some adhesive in an aerosol can. We jumped on his golfcart and went off to find Pat Amble to ask him to assist in gluing my canopy to the frame. Pat works for Sport Performance Aviation (home of the Panther and Cougar airplanes) and has glued more canopies than anyone I know. He gave me some pointers and offered to assist when I was ready. I also got answers from Joe on the list of 13 questions about the plane I had been compiling all week.
