Brief Description: F-904L Attach Straps and F-719R&L Stiffeners
Lots going on with work, family and Christmas but I finally got back into the garage. Ginger's aunt is visiting and wanted to see the plane. She checked it out and looked through all of the plans. I think she was impressed with what we have done. I'm not sure she thought I would get this far!
Today I wanted to start with something that didn't require a lot of thought, so I broke out the F-904L Attach Straps. Turns out, I still had to think about it for a minute. The plans call for you to measure 1 and 19/32" and drill them but I found this did not leave me any edge distance to speak of. On "He Who Shall Not be Named's" build log, he said "Bah, Humbug" (loose translation) on the measurement and said just don't put them up against the flange of the longeron. I found another build log (forget who-sorry!) who just used a 1/8" spacer between the Strip and Longeron to set the distance. I did this and it worked great. Next up, was the F-719 Skin Stiffeners and the small angle attach pieces. I had already drilled the holes in the angle (and I don't yet own a 90 degree drill) so I drilled the angle to the stiffener at 5/8" overhang as called for. I clecoed the angle to the stiffener and taped the stiffener into position where I could see my hand-drawn center line through the holes. I started to drill and of course, the stiffener slipped a little. C'est la vie. I clamped the angle into place on the firewall and marked its location so I would be able to tell if it moved when I unclecoed the skin and pulled it back. It stayed in position and I was able to drill the firewall angle through the hole in the F-719L. I did the same thing on the other side, only this time the stiffener didn't slip when I began to drill it. Next up is the lower longerons.
