Brief Description:  Comm Antenna Doubler Plate

Begin the installation of the Comant comm antennas for the RV8. The Garmin G3X Touch installation manual, which includes the installation of the GTR-20 and GTR-200 comm radios, calls for an antenna to have a minimum of 18" x 18" ground plane, and if there is a second antenna, to be a minimum of 48" distance to eliminate issues on certain frequencies.

Well, on the RV8, with the tandem configuration and slider canopy, there is no area on the top of the fuse to mount an antenna. The common place, is on the belly, immediately aft of the main wing spar.

• Marked and cut two doubler plates from .063.
• Located on one plate, the location for the .5" hole where the antenna will penetrate.
• Drilled the pilot hole using #40, final drilled using unit bit to .5"
• Test fitted the antenna to the doubler plate, marked the four holes for the attaching screws using #40 bit.
• Disassembled, and then drilled the four holes for the antenna attachment screws, then final drilled to size for AN8R8 flush screws.
• Located #40 holes for attaching nut plates to the four holes for the antenna mounting screws, using a nut plate jib, drilled the required holes.
• Deburred all holes.
• Test fitted the antenna to the doubler plate to ensure the four holes align to the antenna base.

That's all for now... Going out of town Fri through Tues, so will not be back on the project until the 8th at the earliest. The weekend is friends and family reunion in Cedar Point in Sandus
