Transition Training with Jan Bussell in Okeechobee FL. I drove down to Okeechobee FL from Columbus GA, which is south of Orlando about 70 miles and exiting the turn pike at Yeehaw Junction, then continuing south for another 35 miles to Okeechobee, north of Lake Okeechobee. Some great restaurants in include Parrot Island and Pueblo Viejo.
Jan lives on an airpark 10 miles northwest. Day one started with ground school, describing the characteristics of his RV6, etc and a pre-flight on the RV6. Jan is tall, I am not, and Jan had placed blocks on the rudder pedals for my benefit. Jan demonstrated the proper sight profile (where to look) when landing the plane, and we fired up and taxied into position on the grass runway. Take-off was an adventure in directional control but managed to get airborne. Climbed up to altitude and performed air work, including a variety of turns, slow flight, stall detection and full stall recovery, and accelerated stall recovery. I flew in the right seat since the engine controls are mid cabin in the RV6. After airwork we flew over to Okeechobee County where the landing and take-off work was to be performed.
All take-off and landings were adventurous. After some time, we performed a full stop and took a break in the FBO/restaurant on the field. Afterwards, more take-off and landing work, and more over-controlling the aircraft on the ground. I lost count of the operations, but Jan kept track. When done for the day, returned to the airpark and landed. During the de-brief, Jan asked about the rudder pedal blocks, he had some different (bigger) blocks, and we both decided it was a good idea to switch for Wed. On Wed with the bigger rudder pedal blocks, take off and landings were much better, easier to provide input for control. After more touch and goes and full stop/taxi back operations, Jan was satisfied I had gained some competence. I recommend Jan whole heartily for your RV transition training.
