Brief Description:  Engine Break-In Flights

Begun Phase I flight testing. Rules I am going by: (Weather VFR, low winds at landing and take-off), no squawks, any previous issues addressed.

Because I started with an overhauled engine with zero time, I begin flight testing with engine break in flights. I am using 100W mineral oil for the first 40-50 hours. The idea is to fly at 4500 - 5500 feet at 75% power for at least an hour, ideally more. I am running the engine at full rich for now to keep the CHTs in check.

My Phase I operating area is bordered by KCSG, KAUO, KLGC, 5A9, KOPN, 6A1. This is 155 nm flown as way points. For now, until I am convinced the engine is broken in sufficiently for lower power operations, I am flying this route at power.

So far good, CHT's continue to drop as more time is put on the engine. Since first flight I have 15 hours and 5 flights, and the plane flies straight and level, no heavy wing. The CHT is now running 340 - 390 per cylinder, and just performed the first oil change, using 100 mineral oil for the first 40 - 50 hours. It's a pretty awesome feeling after so many years of building to be back in the flying business and having performed the first flight. There are some handling differences between the 6 and the 8 that I am getting a good feel and am looking forward to completing Phase I test cards. I am using the EAA Flight Test material as a base line for my program.

Once the engine is broken in, I will progress with the remaining steps of the Phase I flight testing. I hope to see you all at Sun-N-Fun in 2020! … and Oshkosh!
