Brief Description:  Conventional Gear Skills Acquisition Day 1

I arrived at Greg Koontz Big Sky Country Sunday evening in time for dinner and meeting Greg's wife, daughter and grandson. On Monday morning, the day started with ground school and a review of the fundamentals of flight aerodynamics, and discussion of ground handling basics for tail wheel aircraft.

After the morning ground school, boarded the Super Decathlon, and flew to the Gadsden airport for ground handling school. At Gadsden, I taxied the plane down the runway, a combination of maintaining the centerline, and taxi at 45 degree turns from side to side, counter the quartering wind in the turns. I also flew down the runway, lifting the tail of the plane, but not taking off until we approached the end of the runway.

All of this was to get the feel of the plane for basic ground handling. After an hour plus, we returned to Big Sky Country for lunch.

After lunch, another ground school where take offs and landings were discussed. Following the ground school, we flew the Super Decathlon to Gadsden and begin practicing the same. These were all three point landings with minimal cross wind.

After an hour plus of this fun, we returned back to Big Sky Country for debrief and dinner...
