Brief Description:  Landing / Recognition Light Redo

After working several iterations of the custom light tube and mounting bracket, and fighting to get the correct offset angle, and finally realizing during testing that the light tube was seriously constraining the light beam, I abandoned the idea entirely.

Since the beam was impressive when the light was mounted directly to the aft side of the cover place, (just pointed 20 degrees off the centerline), I decided to redo the mounting of the light by creating new cover plates (third iteration) and then cutting a squared hole with rounded edges to accommodate installing the light through the hole and also, give the ability to adjust the angle at will.

Marked and cut new cover plates, then marked and cut the holes for the light fixture. I first measured the exterior size of the light fixture. Something like 2.65”, the transferred the measurement to the cover plate, making sure to position the light leaving sufficient clearance for the planned light mounting bracket.

I test fitted the light several times in the cover plate and marked the surrounding fiberglass of the wing tip. Measured, then cut a 90-degree aluminum angle piece, which is trimmed at the outboard end to accommodate the downward curve of the wing tip. Located, marked, the match drilled #40, then #30 holes (qty 3) to rivet the light mounting bracket to the cover plate. Deburred then countersunk the three holes in the mounting bracket and dimpled the three holes in the cover plate. Riveted the mounting bracket to the cover plate. Located the light in the hole of the cover plate, then located the hole for the light mounting hex-head screw. Drilled for the mounting screw and enlarged as required to provide adjustment capability. Installed the cover plate/mounting bracket and light into the wing tip, adjust the light direction so that the light face is 90 degrees to the cover plate of the navigation / strobe cover plate, then tightened. Now to repeat on the left wing tip.
