Brief Description:  Baggage Door Build

While waiting for new aft HS spar reinforcement bars from Van's, proceeded with completing the Baggage door. Primed the ribs and skins, then clecoed the door parts together and used JB weld adhesive on the ribs to the skin. Clecoed the structure minus the inner skin together, then strapped to the fuse to let the JB weld set up in place in the hope of having a door that fits. I used fuel lube on the clecoes to prevent the adhesive from attaching to the clecoes.

After a few days, a bucking buddy stopped by and we riveted the door outer skin to the ribs while the door was strapped to the fuse. Removed the door, and then riveted the inner skin to the door.
I now know the root cause of the door warping… I riveted the bottom row of blind rivets of the door, which twisted the door out of shape and it no longer fit flush to the airframe. So, I removed these rivets, but the door was still twisted out of shape, it in no way now lay flat against the trailing edge of the fuse skin. I did this…

• Strapped the door tightly against the airframe so it was again flush. The straps were place on the rivet lines fore and aft.
• Up the pressure on my rivet gun to 40 – 60 – 90 PSI in succeeding steps and ran the rivet gun across the straps. This improved the situation but did not totally correct.
• Unstrapped the door and marked the high spot on the aft end of the door, and the points where it was flush with the skin.
• Removed the door, and place on carpet on the hanger floor exterior side down.
• Carefully stood on the aft side of the door with my feet at the marked locations where the door was flush on the airframe, and, well, jumped a bit. Man, this door is strong, even without the bottom blind rivets. I did this several times, and each time it improved the situation, until finally, the door fits flush to the aft edge of the baggage door opening of the airframe.
