Brief Description:  Wheel Pants, Spinner, Upper Cowl - Fill and Sand

There sure is a lot of fiberglass in an all metal airplane! The wheel pants, spinner and upper cowl are all in bad shape relative to pin holes, scratches, etc. The lower cowl is in much better shape.

I used several tubes of the 3M Glazing and Spot Putty to fill in pin holes and scratches. Started with the wheel pants. The putty goes on almost like a soft wax, and starts to dry almost immediately, I’d say there is maybe 30 seconds of working time, so just a small spot at a time. It took one tube to cover both wheel pants, part of a tube to cover the spinner, and the remainder plus another tube to cover the upper cowling.

The upper cowling is really a disaster, there is a web material sandwiched between the layers of epoxy, and it just seems there was not enough used when the top cowl was made, it has the texture of a zipper! After applying the glaze, it leaves a red tint where the pine holes and scratches are filled after sanding. The glaze is easy to sand off, leaving a smooth surface.

I wet sanded all surfaces with 800 grit to get as smooth a surface as possible.
