Brief Description:  Wing Tip Flanges

I am starting the installation for the Hoerner wing tips. The instructions have you build a very substantial flange for the wingtips. The same flanges would be used to install the extended wing tips which is why they are beefy. I doubt I will ever install the extended tips but maybe the next owner would so I am going to build the heavy flanges per the instructions.

First I sanded the inner wing skins at the tips in preparation for the flange laminates. This took awhile due to the build up thicknesses at the spar locations. The goal here is to start with a consistant skin thickness. Mine measured about .075 thick. The skin will first be built up to a thickness of .180 which will require about seven plys. I formed and attached alum sheet to the lower wing skins per plans and then added strips of self adheasive neoprene rubber that I got from McMaster Carr flush against the edge of the wing skin. The plans call for pop riveting the aluminum sheet to the wing with pop rivets. I used double sided duct tape instead. The rubber strips will act as a dam to lay up against while building up the skin thickness. When the skin is flush with rubber strip, laminate flanges will be layed accross the top of the strips. The flanges are an additional nine plys!
