Brief Description:  Nose Gear Updates

I currently have the nose gear fork separated from the oleo strut to update to larger bolts (see 7/21/07 entry). I am also replacing the landing gear scissors to the current machined design. My gear came with cast scissors. Additionally the upper scissor attachment on the nose wheel was originally a strap weldament. The new design is a machined clamp with a lot more stiffness. This was done to eliminate nosewheel shimmy.

Today I stripped the pro-seal used between the oleo strut and th nosewheel fork. I will apply new pro-seal prior to putting it back together with the larger bolts.

The new upper clamp utilizes a different friction material that the welded strap version. I peeled off the old material which left quite a mess. The glue used to bond the material was tough! Multiple applications of paste paint stripper finally did the trick. The new camp came with adhesive backed UHMV plastic strip for use as the friction material. Unfortunately, the adhesive was dried up and the material was somewhat rotton. My update kit was produced in 1994 so what do you expect! Anyway McMaster Carr to the rescue, I will order more UHMV plastic on Monday.
