Brief Description:  Station B Bulkhead - Nutplates and Primer

Primered the Station B bulkhead, installed nutplates and drilled out mounting holes for AN3 bolts.

This weekend, after a couple of months away from the airplane doing house projects, I cleaned and primered the bulkhead with Stewart System's white EcoPrime, and installed the #8 nutplates. I had to order the one-lug nutplates to finish this part, so I was stalled until I did that anyhow. These were used at the ends of the bulkhead where the angled part is so that the 3" screw spacing could be maintained.

After finishing the nutplates, I drilled out the mounting tabs on the fuselage and installed the bulkhead with AN3 bolts. My quickbuild kit came with the tabs on the fron instead of the rear of the Sta.B tube. Because of this, my bulkhead is mounted on the front of the tube instead of the rear as called for in the builder's manual. I had to trim about 1/2" off the tunnel to make it line up.

I will drill holes in this bulkead as required for Brake and fuel lines when I get to that point. I need to make the rear 'belly-pan' part of the boot cowl first to see how things will fit.

Incidently, I do not plan to paint this bulkhead any further. The EcoPrime is a one-part polyurethane, and appears to me to sufficiently withstand weather and chemicals so as to not need a topcoat on an interior location. I painted a piece of aluminum flashing with this primer, and left the flashing outside for several months, and so far it's as good as the day I painted it. I live in a pretty harsh coastal environment for corrosion and mildew such, so this is a good enough test for me. I don't think this treatment is any less effective than that used on aircraft (and my wings) which have only zinc-chromate inside. But this primer is 'much!' better to work with and produces excellent finish results. And even though it doesn't give you that "I'm building an 'Aircraft' - see the greenish-yellow primer" feeling, or any 'aviation' chest-beating braggadocio - that's OK with me because I don't need that sort of stuff anyhow.
