Brief Description: STAB FITTING
Fitting the stabilizer to the fuselage turned out to be a very tricky and exacting process, more so than the wing. From image one you can see the alignment is very precise. Also, the workspace is limited and a lot of the precise movement is necessary.
This was a trial fit. So obviously, were hoping nothing changes when we finally put the airplane together again in the Northwest. Many times I have seen jig built assemblies that worked perfectly in the factory turn out to be not so jigged after transportation.
When we went to do the final installation of the stabilizer/ elevator on the airplane, it consumed an estimated 180 hours involving all of us. First, just getting the two of them in place, required a crew of five or six people struggling and cursing for several hours, then there was the seemingly endless process of attaching the elevator to the stab, and then drilling out the stab fittings to the correct diameter and installing the bolts. Finally, the cables had to be recut and swaged. At both ends, fore and aft, the workspace was very restricted and frustrating. We wouldn't want to have to do this over.
