Brief Description:  Primer WARS....No just my take on it

Ok, I must have agonized over primer enough hours to make up a solid week when I first built my RV-9 empennage (now sold). I started with AFS waterborne primer (which is good stuff) but I did not like the etching process or paint gun. I tried self etching rattle can stuff from Sherwin Williams but it was expensive and no one was sure of the corrosion protection (Although I own a Cessna from 1962 with very little, if any corrosion). I also tried the Tempo rattle cans, but they're expensive and sometimes clog the spay nozel.

I wanted an easy safe primer that wasn’t a lot of work or expense.

I found Krylon Tough Coat in a search on Vansairforce.com and found it to be good stuff. It was about $3.50 a can bought in a 12 can case online. It is MIL Spec TTP-1757, and sticks well to aluminum. I'm not sure if it is self-etching, but I give everything a light scuff with the scotchbrite pad, clean with lacqor thinner, then a quick wash in dish soap to remove oils. After that spray away. The directions claim it is a safe alternative to zinc chromates also.

One thing that I do notice is if you only give it a quick dusting the particles tend to dry powdery on the surface. I find giving a medium first coat, and then a second touch up on the light spots gives me good results.

Recap: Easy rattle can application, no clean-up, cheap, Mil Spec TTP-1757, cool OD green, prime 1 part or 10 parts, dries fast and safer than zinc chromate.
