Brief Description:  Second Engine Start

Today I ran the engine for the second time to confirm repairs for a couple of problems discovered on the first engine run, and to complete a few more checks.

I wrote up another checklist for the start including some new things to check. The engine started right up again and ran well, and I worked my way through the items to check. The first item was to check the repair to the alternator wiring problem discovered on the first start, and the alternator output is now normal so the fix did it. The next item was to check the Lightspeed electronic ignition. I had repaired a problem in the flywheel sensor wiring harness and wanted to see if that solved the problem. The engine ran smooth throughout the range up to 1800 RPM. During the mag check with the LSE alone, the rpm drop was a slight 10 rpm and continued to run smooth. The mag check with the magneto only, the drop was about 80rpm and the engine ran a little rougher. Both of these were the expected result and the Lightspeed ignition seems to be running normally, much better than the first start.

A couple of items I wanted to confirm from the first start were to check the vacuum guage (which was normal) and the idle (about 680rpm which is normal) and the mixture. To check the mixture you slowly lean out the mixture at idle and should see a slight rise in rpm before seeing a drop. On both engine runs there was no rise in rpm at all as I leaned. This indicates that the mixture is set too lean.

After engine shutdown I made a few more system checks. I did a com check with ground control and both radios were loud and clear. I also was unable to get any satellite reception on the GPS, I also noted that the elevator trip indication was not changing with trim changes.

So a couple of problems fixed and a few new items discovered. I'll look into these tomorrow.
