Brief Description:  Empennage Attachment

Now I begin to put the big pieces together out in the hanger. First, even though I had the Empennage covered with a tarp, It still got tree pollen on it. When the pollen falls from late May to early June, it gets on and in everything. When the wind blows it comes down in sheets and there is a yellow-green haze in the air. So my first task was to wipe down the outside and inside of the Empennage. Then my nieghbor Russ and I put it on a work table.

Step 1: The VS-1204 FWD Skin was already removed. Removed the bagged Lower Hinge Assy and hardware from the V-Stab Assy.
Step 2: Removed the blue vinyl from the top aft end of the Tailcone Assy and replaced with paper to prevent scratching the skin. The bottom edge of the assy was previously deburred.
Step 3: Attached the rear spar of the V-Stab Assy, verifying that the control cable strings were not pinched beneath the spar, using the lower four fasteners. Removed the protective paper. Attached the front spar ov the V-Stab Assy to the Tailcone Assy. Did not tighten any bolts.
Step 4: Installed the Lower Hinge Assy on the V-Stab Assy and Tailcone Assy. Tightened all V-Stab Assembly Bolts to prevent movement.
Step 5: Installed the Rudder Assy to the V-Stab Assy. Used AN960-10 washers top and bottom.
Step 6: Verified Rudder Assy swung freely. Rudder travel was limited by the rudder stops. Only slight contact was made with the edge of the V-Stab skin and that was resolved by slightly filing the V-Stab skin at contact areas. No rubbing occured between the V-Stab and Rudder skins.
