Brief Description:  EAA Tech Counselor Visit

It's a cold and rainy day in Southern California today. It's brutal man. It got below 60 degrees and I just can't work in such horrible conditions! ;-)

I went to my EAA chapter meeting on Tuesday and met our EAA Tech Counselor, Dave Prizio. If you read Kitplanes magazines then you'll recognize him as a regular contributor. He's also a DAR and a member fo the EAA Homebuilt Aircraft Council. Most likely he'll be doing my airworthiness inspection when the aircraft is finished.

I drove out to Chino airport (KCNO) to Dave's hanger and brought along my vertical stabilizer. He generally liked the quality of my riveting and overall workmanship. I have a couple of fasteners that were partially drilled out but not yet punched through the hole because of rivet swelling between the layers. We discussed some possible ways to remove the rivets without damaging the hole or bending the flange. He also passed along some general tips I can use to prevent this situation from occuring again. As for the faint smilies on a couple of the flush rivet heads, he was OK with them.

When you get a tech inspection done you get some paperwork documenting the inspection and general comments on the build. This gets filed with EAA HQ in Oshkosh. It's not an official FAA mandated inspection but intended as guidance to produce a better quality product. After all, homebuilding is all about education.
