Brief Description:  Joystick Buttons - Determining the Functions

After surveying the different types of stick grips at Airventure and some additional research on the web I decided on using the Tosten grips. I liked the amount and placement of buttons and the grip felt very good in my hand. I tried several others, but this one felt best.

I've seen a vast array of functions crammed onto stick grips, but some of the choices don't seem to be well thought out. First thing is to develop a criteria for functions on the stick. Any function needs to earn is way onto the stick. Simple is better and less confusing.

It boils down to two things:
1. It must be something that needs to be done while your hands are on the stick and throttle, or
2. It must be used often in flight.

Push-to-talk: Yes. You use this constantly throughout your flight.
Flaps: No, it's not used enough during flight. Better to put it near the throttle.
Trim: Absolutely. You trim when you change pitch and power. No hand is free during this.
AP CWS: Yes, you need to hold it down while maneuvering.
AP disconnect: Yes. It's most often used at the end of an approach low to the ground.
Starter: Not a chance. Used once per flight (hopefully). This is a safety issue! It's too easy to inadvertantly engage the starter. Anyone who puts this function on the stick isn't thinking clearly.
TO/GA: No, it's not used enough to justify being on the stick. Better to put it just above the throttle so you can tap it with your finger as you go to max power.
Smoke: Yes. I'm not planning on a smoke system, but I'll keep the option open. The Tosten grip has a thumb rest thats perfect for this button should I add it.
Ident: Nope, not used enough.
Radio or frequency swap: Nope, one hand is generally free for this function.

AP disconnect is a bit harder to reach than the CWS. This is by design.

Functions are the same, but the CWS and disconnect are reversed (LH vs RH).
