Brief Description:  Building EAA workbenches, Part I

The plan for today was to build three workbenches. Two of them were standard EAA 2 ft x 5 ft workbenches and the third is a mobile power tools table.

I made a small modification to the EAA workbenches in that I added three inches to the length and width of the table top to give me a 1.5 in. overhang for clamping purposes.

The mobile power tools table idea is ripped off, er, I mean borrowed from Ed and Colleen Kranz at goodplaneliving.com. They built an RV-10 and posted videos of the build on YouTube. The table holds the four main power tools: band saw, drill press, bench sander and bench grinder.

Helping me was Jay Hansen and Rob Edwards. Jay is a machinist who owns a three-axis milling machine. He's been a friend of mine since high school and has never had the opportunity to work with sheet metal. Rob owns a medical services company and is a fellow pilot who is contemplating a career change to become a professional pilot. I wish I was a couple of dozen years younger so I could do it too!

Off to Home Depot to get the plywood and 2 x 4's, assorted wood screws, and glue. The 3/4 in. plywood for the table top was the most expensive at about $35 each. The bottom shelving uses 1/2 in. plywood and it was only $20 (only one sheet needed). The 2 x 4's were pretty inexpensive at $3.19 per 8 ft board and I needed 20 of them. Total bill for materials was about $220.

Rob and Jay both brought various wood cutting power tools, drills, bits, clamps, etc. Rob did all the lumber cutting and did a great job. Cuts were spot on and the final table did not need any leg levelers.

We got to assembling the first table and it went together pretty easily. We made sure everything was square and it took a bit longer to finsh than we thought. Daylight ran out by the time we finished the first table, so the second table will be built later.
