Brief Description:  EAA Sportair Workshop - Sheet Metal Basics

I can't build an airplane without first learning the techniques involved, so I signed up for the EAA Sportair workshop for sheet metal basics. It was held in Oakland, CA at an aviation maintenance school at Oakland International Airport.

The instructor was Jack Dueck. He literally wrote the book on sheet metal building basics. It's available on the EAA website for a mere pittance! Ok, $28.95. Well worth the money.

My two projects were a a simple assembly of an angle and some sheet metal, and a more complicated trailing edge section with a movable control surface.

It took me about seven to eight hours of time to finish the trailing edge section. One issue I discovered is that ergonomics is important! I was plagued with back pain throughout the build which I finally figured out was due to me holding the tools out away from my body. I had to take frequent breaks to allow the pain to subside before continueing. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out a better way to hold the tools and position my body to allieviate the problem once I start the real construction.

I learned quite a bit over that weekend. Both how to, and maybe more importantly, how not to go about constructing sheet metal structures. I'm looking forward to starting the real thing now.

I still have the not-so-small task of getting the garage ready though. Cabinets on one side of the garage have to be removed. I need a main workbench and a couple of the EAA workbenches, shelving, air compressor, drill press, bench grinder, aircraft tools, etc. Lots of work to do before I can order the kit!
