Dad and I spent Saturday cleaning and acid washing the parts ready for spraying the primer. I completed a priming of the part noting that the main issue is applying the priming to thick.
Sunday I applied the Desogel EAP-12 and unfortunately according to Ian (see below), applied it a little to heavy....
Ian Irvine, a friend of Peter Clark came around tuesday evening and helped with me out with some comments on the paint booth, spray gun setup and painting in general. The information was INVALUABLE..... It just goes to show you, there is nothing like experience.
Because of Ian's help, I now have a good understanding of many aspects of the process I did not truely appreciate before. Doh!!!
The interesting part of this was that I had actually applied the primer to THIN.... and so another coat was in order. I completed this Tuesday night, inside the 72 hours max between coats. All the parts are now ready for riveting on Saturday and Sunday.
I have now developed a paint volume rule of thumb for the application of the primer to the parts.
1. For small thin or plate parts (5 mil) 2. Meduim parts (7 mil) (i.e. small ribs) 3. Large parts (10 mil) 5. Skins (15 mil up to 20 mil)
This will allow for a volume calculation for mixing of the paint volume. If you use this as a starting point and then make some modifications later, you should end up pretty close.
