Over the past week I have been practicing a number of various riveting techniques using both the 3x rivet gun and bucking bar and the pneumatic rivet squeezer. I have done some dimpling and countersinking and riveting to various thicknesses. I have even used my rivet cutter to try and get a handle on adjusting rivet lengths. I have used the DRDT-2 and the rivet squeezer to complete dimpling.
Basically, I am just trying to get a handle on the techniques to ensure I do the adequate learning before I start. Well today I received the toolbox practice kit and got right into it. It all was going well, until I read the instructions incorrectly, completed 2 drill holes and then realised that the location could not be correct (i.e. too close to the edge)....Aaarrrhhhh!!!!. After re-reading the instructions and realigning the hinge, the instructions made sense. Lucky it is only a toobox.
Note to oneself. Always do a 3D walkthrough in head BEFORE drilling....
Should complete the toolbox tomorrow, however, I still have some aluminium preparation questions. I will definitely need some help from an experienced builder particularly relating the deburring and what is reasonable and correct. I think I got it, however there is a lot of feel to the process and Iwould really like to have this covered before I do any damage.
I guess the 5 year job can wait a couple of weeks to get these baseline skills correct.
