Brief Description:  Preparation for priming

Today was a clean-up in readiness for priming the parts.

All parts have been drilled, de-burred, countersunk, checked and rechecked.

I am very excited as I have recently been in contact with Gus Slattery and Gail Hunter from Akzo Nobel Aerospace from Australia in the hope of getting on the ground floor of their industry changing new eco-friendly paint system.

The new product, Aerodur 2100, is a space age primer that has a base of Magnesium instead of Chromium. It is a non-toxic 2-pack primer. Basically this makes it a lot safer than the existing carcinogenic and toxic Chromium primers on the market today.

In addition, the preparation of the Aluminium substrate is simpler, requiring only a basic clean, PreKote (i.e. an environmentally safe primer adhesion promoter) and the 2-pack Mg based primer.

Studies completed by the US Military, and others, have shown performance that either equals to or surpasses the existing Chromium based technologies being used in industry today. Needless to say I am excited about incorporating this technology into the build. A new aircraft with ground breaking priming technology.

As I wait for primer information and product, I have been steadily improving my workshop. I have changed the layout for my general grinding and hacking workbench, added new storage (i.e. thanks Gess) and made my bandsaw mobile via a castor wheel base. This will help workspace management out quite a bit.

Now, where’s that paint……… :-)
