Brief Description: Rudder rivet + Bend + Understructure
Most of todays work focussed on the rudder, including riveting, bending and under structure work. The primer on the skin and stiffeners had a full 24 hours to harden, and I decided to then get into the back riveting of the stiffeners. This was a frustrating process, as I was not too happy with the initial quality of the back rivets. I generally had a high chance of bending over the rivet or skewing the rivet off when being back rivetted. After I applied more down pressure and supported the plastic cage at the base of the rivet it was less likely to slide or bend over. However, I did end out replacing a large number of rivets that I was just not happy with. Overall, I got to a satisfactory state, but was very surprised in the difficulty I had when back riveting when compared to experience I had on the practice kit.
After that was complete I focused on building a nice bending assembly/jig as per vans instructions in section 5.7. I used 190x45mm pine and four door hinges, I then added two handles to try and apply uniform pressure over the jig. The assembly was lightly screwed to the table to provide a bit more rigidity so I could focus on the skin placements and bend quality. I then bent the rudder skin, and it worked out really nicely! I think I was pretty close to the final bend size/area, but will know more once I get up to the cleco stage.
I then focussed on the under structure for the rudder, working on the top rib and skin, I should get it mated up with and match drilled with the skin and primed over the weekend.
