Brief Description:  Riveting the VS

Finished off the last priming job on the vertical stabiliser, it is a bit of a waste of time priming/spraying one rib, but it came out ok. After it dried I then spent a bit of time examining the manual on the assembly process, gathering what rivets I needed as well as setting up the shop air supply and a bit of riveting practice on my test pieces.

I started by riveting the skeleton together, I could do most of it with the pneumatic squeezer, but the lower ribs had to be done with a gun and a bucking bar. I was pretty happy with the results, so I moved onto fitting the skin and then clecoing up all of the holes. With the HS cleco’d together as well I almost ran out of cleco’s!

I began at the intersection of the middle rib and front spar, and radiated out in each direction, I was very happy with the results, I was careful to apply enough painters tape to the edges of the bucking bar, and regularly renewing the small circle of tape on the face of the mushroom head. The left the skin nice and clean with no marks, and I had very little damage to the internal prime job.

I took my time with regular breaks, and managed to get the internal structure of the VS together, so was very happy with my work in the end. I have organised to visit my TC next weekend, so will take some parts over for inspection and see if my work is up to scratch.

Once the inspection is complete and fingers crossed! I can then rivet on the rear spar and finish my first assembly!
