Brief Description:  Priming Vertical and Horizontal Stab parts

I was very apprehensive of starting the priming process. After extensive researching and soul searching, I decided to use the Aircraft Finishing Systems (AFS) primer/sealer product on my airplane. My total sum experience in applying quality paint/primer using quality equipment adds up to a big fat zero. So it was nice to have the advice and help of some professionals and the use of a first class paint booth for my first experience at applying primer to my project.

The AFS primer/sealer appealed to me for several reasons. First, there is no complicated mixing. The stuff is thinned with distilled water, and unused product can go right back into the container. Second, the stuff in non-hazardous waste, and does not produce toxic fumes. With two young boys in my house and the prospect of doing some painting in my attached garage, I didn't want to have evacuate my home to spray like you would with epoxy primer. I found the AFS product very easy to work with. The durability of the product is advertised to compete with epoxy products.

I used the AFS aluminum etch (also environmentally friendly) and scrubbed the parts. After rinsing with distilled water, I hung them to dry in the paint booth for an hour. My morning in the booth was going very well, until...HORROR OF HORRORS....I ran out of paint. The quart I had purchased was gone, and I still needed to apply the last coat. (The AFS product is applied in several light "fog" coats). The booth I was in is notorious for moving ALOT of air, and you use more product than normal in it. As nice as it was in the booth, I hated running out of paint.

I called AFS and had an emergency shipment sent overnight. I was told everything would be OK, you can apply coats as long as it wasn't completely cured, and it takes the stuff 10 days to completely cure and harden.

Lesson learned...I also got rid of my apprehension of setting up, painting in my garage, and cleaning up. The booth was nice, but it won't be necessary for small jobs.
