The EFIS has two power leads that need to be soldered together before going to the VP-X (electronic circuit breaker). Unfortunately, my new soldering iron bought from the aviation department of Home Depot, won't get hot enough to melt solder. Hmm.
After a bit of research, I learned that I need a soldering iron with 40-60 amps of power. My new one only has 18. Also, soldering electronics calls for flux core solder. Most of what I have, which I inherited from my Dad and Grandfather (really old) is not marked. The solder that is marked is either acid core or non-lead. Both are no-nos for electronic soldering. I'm going to pitch everything and start new.
The soldering iron I ordered from Amazon (X-Tronic Model #3020-XTS Digital Display Soldering Iron Station) costs just under $50. A wise investment, I think. It will get to almost 900 F. That ought to do it! I chose this one based on YouTube research. Ha ha!
