Brief Description:  Preparing for Landing Lights

Image number 1 shows the two "production" lenses, one in the foreground and one still on the flannel-covered form. The flannel covered stick used to "iron" the lenses is shown sitting on top of the lens still on the form.

Began the next phase of landing light preparation by cutting out the frames for the landing lights. The frames serve a couple of purposes. First, they are doublers, providing additional material around the hole in the leading edge to support the loads that would normally go through the area where the hole now is. Their second purpose is to allow the 1/8" thick plexiglas to sit flush with the 0.025 skin. To do this I will make two "shims" out of 0.050 2024-T3 aluminum sheet. These will have holes in them that match the cutout in the wing skin and with the 0.025 skin will be the same thickness as the 0.125 thick plexiglas. Under these two 0.050 shims will be a piece of 0.025 2024-T3 aluminum sheet. This will be the mounting frame for the lens and will have a 1 inch flange for the lense to sit up against and five #10 nutplates on the top and bottom flanges for the flush-head screws that will fasten the plexiglas to the frame.
