Brief Description:  Assembling the Elevators

Next step is to roll the leadeing edge of the elevator. Van's manual recommends using duct tape and a dowel or pipe. I used some black steel pipe that I got at Home Depot when I did the rudder and decided to try using wooden dowels on the elevators because I was concerned about dropping that steel pipe on the aluminum skin and damaging the skin or at least the cladding. I think the wood dowels worked as well or better. One issue with the steel pipe was that as the teeth of my vice grips or channel locks dug into the surface it raised sharp edges that were bad for your hands if you should happen to grab them near the ends. Those same rough surfaces woudl also damage the skin. The wood dowels are softer and even though the ends do get chewed up the resulting splinters are not as dangerous to your hands nor likely to damage the skins.
