Brief Description:  Wing Completion

Anyone who has built an airplane knows that it is not easy. It takes time, basic skills and most of all patience. This project my brother in-law and I have embarked on is no different. However, we purchased a previously owned kit. In doing so, we had to accept that fact that we might have to correct some deficiencies in work already accomplished.

What is acceptable by one person is not acceptable by another. Each of us have our own standards which we strive to meet. In our case, the workmanship we found was unacceptable in every way. The original owner would have ended up a statistic in the should have known better category. What we found shocked us. From out of alignment ribs to epoxy beads ranging from 1/16th to 1/8th inch wide with no fillet whatsoever. The construction of the wings was what basically amounted to the biggest, baddest error anyone could make. “Get It Doneitist”. To top it off, we found a damaged front spar due to transportation.

So, we had to disassemble both wings, replace a spar and reassemble them from scratch. So much for a quick build. Well, here we are 366 + hours into a supposed 400 - 450 hour build and we have now only completed the wings. We have had our set backs due to time money and family but we have held true to our goal of completing this project.

Most builders give up over time because it is taking too long and it does not seem like it will “ever” be done. Relax! If you get discouraged, step back, take a breath, and plunge right back in. It's a lot of work, but after each little step, admire what you have accomplished. You may have a thousand more steps to take. So what! Eventually you will get there. I had a friend who was a pilot with Eastern Airlines. He spent twenty three years building a Fokker DR1 replica from scratch. He completed the build and one week before his first flight, he had a heart attack and lost his medical. He had to watch as a close friend took the first flight. He had tears in his eyes as he watched his beauty climb into the air. He was sad it
