Brief Description:  Spar Inserts Completed

Completed spar inserts today. 2 1/2 hours yesterday and 1 3/4 hours today and they are done and ready to install. Cut, filed, polished, washed, prepped and primed. Total time to complete, 6.25 hours.

We will have to wait for the primer to cure before installation but that is OK. We still have to drill out 12 rivets on each strut attach bracket in order to install them. We also have to clean out the spar interiors as well as possible to avoid jamming during installation. We purchased the Inserts in 5 foot lengths figuring we would save money cutting and shaping them ourselves. But, the labor involved in getting them ready to install could have been better spent. It would have cost us double to have them cut into 30" lengths and shaped but upon looking at the labor and delay it caused, it just might have been worth it.

Now all that remains is to get them lightly sanded with 600 grit sandpaper washed and installed. We can then get the wings remounted, install the final ribs, fuel tanks trailing edge and then fabricate the aileron and flap hinge brackets. We plan to have those cut by a sheet metal shop using a water jet cutter to ensure each of them are exactly the same without any warping. Working on CAD drawings for those now. It will then be a simple matter to build the flaps and ailerons. Still a lot to do, but progress is beginning to be made in the right direction.
