If you are not an Aussie, you have probably never heard of Lake Eyre or the Simpson Desert, but downunder this year these locations have been getting big press coverage due to a once in a lifetime experience of flood waters and the Australian Outback has been inundated.
So, to satisfy the curiosity and burn some avgas, Annie & I decided to take our first homebuilt on a tour to look see.
Starting in Brisbane we flew to Windorah, via Roma on day one. Day 2, down to Birdsville and then accross the Simpson Desert following the "French Line" to Dalhousie Springs for a quick swim starkers before getting into Oodnadatta for more fuel and suitable refreshments. Day 3 we flew down to the Warburton Groove where the floodwaters from locations further north finally run into the Northern area of Lake Eyre North, and then to William Creek and more Avgas, before flying down to Arkaroola, an area of geological wonder in the northern end of the Flinders Ranges.
Two days of great food and siteseeing was then followed by our next leg up to the Cooper Creek where it runs into the Strzelecki Desert, before heading east again back towards Brisbane via Innamincka and Thargomindah. We had to leave the RV4 at Thargomindah for 6 days due to a fuel line problem I discovered during a pretakeoff, and took a commercial flight back home.
We drove back after 6 days with repair kit, to find that zebra finches had built a nest under the cowl and already had 5 eggs underway. These little guys don't stuff about and make the best of the good seasons in the outback. All in, more than 2 weeks of building time lost but the flying time well worth it.
