Brief Description:  Strake lower skin

New batch of MGS hardener - H287 slow 7 0249.

Approach the strake lower skins with some trepidation. I start this mid afternoon. I'm a bit tired after other jobs, but I've burnt half a bottle of gas to heat the shed so I really want to proceed. Figure I can stop after one skin if I want.

Prep the foam for both strakes, then backfill the starboard rear seam with flox. Apply a fillet of flox in the strake/fuselage join.

1 x UND parallel to the leading edge and 1 parallel to the ribs and peel ply the lot. I overlapped the leading edge about 2" past vertical, 1" onto the fuselage, 4" onto the spar and halfway down OD.[Timewarp: there should have been a 5" 1 x UND tape at the tip, but I forgot]. Note at the time that the 2nd ply overlap does not add anything to the structure, and wonder why it is there.

Consult with SWMBO, and proceed with the other side in the same fashion. I idly peruse the plans before applying the peel ply, and discover I have omitted the frikken tape! Run back to the starboard, peel off the peel ply, whack on a 5" wide 1 x UND tape at the tip and smooth out the peel ply. Phew! With more leisure do the same port side and appy peel ply. 2kg of resin consumed!

Go down to the house for a late dinner, then return to clean up. Immediately am struck by two startling realisations:

#1 - I forgot to use the 50" wide Colan UND, which would have let me use one piece.

#2 - Become convinced I have f*&ked up the layup by putting the second UND ply in the wrong orientation, which is why the overlap will not give any strength. I am too tired and the shed is now too cold to do anything about it, and the first layup has cured to far already. I can either peel it all off and throw it away, or leave it and consider rectification later. I think I have read about somebody else doing this wrong, so will research before I trash the layup. [Timewarp tomorrow: Nothing is wrong. The layup is fine. Don't work when you are tired. Gas is a lot cheaper than resin]
