Brief Description:  Mounting Elevators on Canard

Rant Continued:

Go inside and crank up the TERF CD and look at the LongEz Roncz Canard plans L jig. This closely resembles the Cozy L jig as shown in Fig. 17/18. I suddenly realise that a jig that places the Elevators at 15 degrees TE up would help a builder to avoid the situation of jigging at zero degrees, then not being able to achieve 15 degrees TE up. Looking again at the Cozy plans, with my multifocals on, between Fig. 17 & 18 I FIND A NOTE IN TINY, TINY TYPE!

“The L jig shown has been changed as shown on M-18, to ensure a full 15 degrees up-travel of the elevators and zero gap in that position. Then when the elevators are in trail the gap will be 0.2”. This contradicts what is shown in the body of the plans and depicted in fig.17 & 18.

Back to Cozy links and find the following trail in the archive.

CN50 describes Tom McNeilly’s suggestion regarding the Elevator installation jig L. Some builders had problems achieving the required 15 degrees of up elevator travel after the elevator hinges are installed permanently in the canard using this jigging block. He suggests a revised jigging block to hold the elevator in the 15 degree up position while installing the hinges. His revised jig was shown in the newsletter, but I don’t have a copy, as I only have (and with my edition plans, need) newsletters CN76+. The UC site doesn’t have pictures with its archived Newsletters.

The FAQ is not clear on the subject, but I had a note here from somewhere that the plans are not clear and experience varies whether there should be a gap between the elevator and the canard when the elevator is in full, trailing-edge up position.

I had just wasted a bunch of time before I figured out Tom’s suggestion has been included in my plans!
