Taped up the cowling as suggested with duct tape. Works at the firewall, but under the cowling edges it just keeps falling off, so removed, and replaced with cloth tape with box tape over the top.
Fix the cowling in position with cleco through the remaining flange bits, and hot glue blocks elsewhere.
Stuff some clay and bits of plastic to help bridge the gaps.
