Brief Description:  Wing storage

Was captivated by a picture on Facebook this week. A cunning fellow had stashed his wings in the study, evading detection by winching them up to the ceiling. Apart from the cunning, I loved the way the strake notch lines up with the opposite wing tip, and when I arrange my wings this way the hooks I have in my shed roof from my previous attempt are in about the right position.

Naively, I decide ratchet tie-downs will be perfect for this and grab a set from Bunnings Aerospace. They are not perfect for this. The ratchet drum fills up with strap before the wings are anywhere near the roof, and letting them down is terrorfying, as there is no way to ratchet them down again, you have to RELEASE them! Getting them started is a pain to, as the first part of the lift is orienting the wings reference each other, and it is a complete embuggeration stopping them from rotating at the start.

I decide the concept is sound, but I need my floor trolleys to hold both wings in the right orientation for initial lifting, then I can winch them up with a proper winch, and they will sit nicely in the area between two skylights. Then I discover my shed will be hosting a neighborhood fire truck for the next few months, and whilst our Subaru will fit underneath, the Land Rover won't...

To size the winch I weighed the wings, port is 28.8kg, starboard (which has all its hardware) 30.7kg. 60kg winch then!

This will either work, or knock the winglets off...
