Brief Description:  Main Spar installation

Finally resolve something that I have not been able to figure out in the plans for the next step, a succession of plans changes has muddied the waters on how many plies to apply in the tapes. In my opinion this is how Step 10 4th paragraph SHOULD look like after CN#78 has been applied logically.

"Before taping, check all dimensions once more. It is not too late to cut the center section spar loose with a hacksaw blade if everything is not perfect. When everything is perfect, lay up a 5 ply BID tape spar to LWY, inside and out, both sides, as shown on M-8, and a 5 ply BID tape spar to longeron, inside and out, both sides as shown on M-7. Then layup a 2 ply BID tape in all remaining spar to fuselage joints, all around the outside, both sides, and all around the inside, both sides. At the firewall, the..." Continue as written.

I am figuring that all the tapes were originally 2 plies of BID, including the Fig. 21 3 x BID tapes pictures, each tape comprising 2 plies of BID. Then those tapes from the spar to the longerons and from the spar to LWY were beefed up to 5 plies, leaving all other tapes as 2 plies of BID.

Mindful of the instruction to "trowel in the flox", I can just visualise it drooling down into the gap between the tips of the forward and rear MLG bulkheads. I plugged the gaps with a bit of scrap foam and glass made from a seatback cutout.

Rehearsed the installation a few times, and prep sanded all the join surfaces, Then dutifully trowelled in the flox, inserted the planned wedges and checked the measurements - all were wrong, the flox had changed something. Went through the whole measure/adjust/measure process a bunch of times until things stopped changing. Breathed a sigh of relief and was heading towards the door to exit and lock it, (I don't have a dog to tie up), when in breezes the missus, who brushes past the airplane to get something from the other side of the shed. I waited in horror for her to leave, then went through the whole measure/adjust/measure process a bunch more times, but
