Brief Description:  Assembling Elevator hardware

Finished trimming elevator ends.

Tried fitting one NC-6 Elevator end piece with BSPQ-44 rivets and was unable to get the head flush before the rivet popped, (email archive led me to believe it would work). Tried BSPQ-43 on the other side, which worked better. Drilled out the -44 and re-fitted with -43.

Fitted jigs to table and assembled the Elevators. Total span is 146.7", should be 146.8". I am not alarmed.

Bondo'd elevators to the jigs

Immediately note discrepancy in my CS-10 joggle on the elevators. I had put them in the plans location 5" from the outboard end, but my elevators are the original length, 3" longer than the amended plans. This means my joggle is 1" outboard of the outboard hinge, which is against the current plans. Not having the original plans I checked out my copies of the OpenEz and Varieze and the counterweights are all inboard of the
outboard hinge. I am as daft as a hammer. Glad I forgot to put a joggle on the bottom...

When cured drilled, reamed and bolted Elevators to offsets, and torqued up all. Attempted to insert hinge pins, and they won't go, fouling in the vicinity of the outboard bolts. Figuring there was some swath in the way I inserted the hinge pin I cut a groove lengthways in the tip and tried to spin it to clear the way. I disassembled the spool piece and tried again from the inboard end. No good. It seems I have managaged to obstruct the hinge pin with the outboard flaming bolt. Not a happy day. Resolve to buy some proper spanners, pull it all apart again and investigate.
