Brief Description:  Assembling Elevator hardware

Peel strength on the Elevator end BID was hopeless, and my lovely plan to tape the elevators together meant there was no space to trim them apart. Ripped off the BID, sanded the flox a bit, and did it again, with some 1/4" Last-a-foam scraps holding them apart.

Assemble the MKNC-12A onto the spool piece, and finally notice there is a stress-relieving radius on the end of the socket, I cut the spool piece to match with de-burring tool and achieve a much better fit.

When I measure the resulting distance between the hinge positions I get a surprise, which takes me some time to understand. Here is what I posted on the Cozy Builder's email list.

Wish I'd paid more attention to the part when making the Canard, but don't actually think I have a problem, just want to share something with others approaching this step.

When placing the foam hard points in the canard in CH 10 Step 06 I set the the inboard points 15.6" either side of the centreline, i.e. 31.2" apart, checking, (and adjusting the position slightly), of the outbound points using the torque tubes fitted to the CZNC-12A (actually CG Products MKNC-12A).

This week I cut my Elevator Spool piece to 30.2", as per the plans, and, (after some adjustment) fitted the MKNC-12A L/R. I measured the "distance between the two hinge slots in the offsets, it should be 31.2". I am choosing to read that as 31.2" between the centreline of each hinge. Mine measure up as 31.36". Close enuf I suppose, the next instruction is, "Adjust as required", I just have to trim a bit off the spool piece and proceed, but I looked a bit further to see where I made the error.

Spool Piece 30.2" plus material on CZNC-12A between spool piece and hinge slot 2 x 0.265" plus 1/2 of the width of the slot on each end to get the centres 2 x .110" = 30.95". WTF??? If you make your Spool Piece and CZNC-12A as per plans they will be 0.25" too close together! Now I'm confused, my parts error is the other way, the centres are 0.16" too far apart.
