Brief Description:  Canopy cutting...and cutting

Havent been putting in a log for each night because it's night after night of the same thing...but the canopy is nearly cut to its final shape. Just some trimming left to do and sanding the edges smooth...and the big cut of course.

I've heard from many builders both in person and on the internet that when cutting their canopy they came to a point where they had trimmed the rear too either too much or very nearly so. I was standing staring at my canopy trying to decide why it wouldn't fit well at the rear. It was simply too wide and had to be pulled in with a bit more force than I was comfortable with. For me, and I assume I'm not alone, the pitfall I fell into was the dimension that Van gave us on the plans. 3 1/4" from the front of the canopy to F866b. Without realizing what I was doing, every time I made a cut I lined the canopy back up with that 3 1/4 mark. The problem with that dear reader, is that the canopy gets shorter every time we cut it...so that mark means nothing until you are very nearly done. Thank god...I had left the rear of the canopy overhanging by a couple of inches due to my RV-8 Guru (we'll call him Gringo in here) telling me how he almost cut his too short. Once I walked back and shoved the canopy forward (ignoring my mark) the rear fit well. Had I cut any more off...I would have been up a creek without a paddle. Then, while cutting the front down until it touched the roll over hoop....I lined up on the 3 1/4 mark just like magic. Just something to keep in mind....don't cut the back much until the front is very close.
