Brief Description:  Vertical Stab Top Cap

With the rudder build (including installed end-caps), I now fitted the vertical stabilizer top cap. First I fit the cap into position, match-drilled the holes through the metal flange, and cleco'd the cap in place. I then mounted the rudder to check clearance between the cap and the rudder. I had to sand the back edge of the cap almost 1/2 inch to get a good consistent clearance edge (1/8 inch) and allow the rudder to swing freely.

Next, I must fill the aft end of the cap. The cap is hollow and open-ended on the aft side, and I want that filled (less drag, no water intrusion, bugs, critters, etc). I used balsa wood to make a dam. and filled it with a slurry of epoxy/hardener with micro-fiber for strength. Once that hardens, I'll sand it down flush with the cap's edges and finish the fill.
