Brief Description:  Drilling the elevator horns for the center bearing

Match-drilling the two elevator horns to mate up with the center bearing was a real trick thanks to Van's. I found a 6 inch length of 1/4 inch (outside diameter) metal tube at a local hydraulics supplier. The tube fits snugly inside the center bearing.

With one elevator mounted and duct-taped flush in the straight trail position, I used the tube as a drill guide to carry a #30 drill laser-straight through the elevator horn, forming a pilot hole. Same for the left side.

Then we removed the two elevators and match-drilled and deburred the holes to their final diameter to accept the AN-4 bolt. We then remounted the elevators and bolted the two horns together through the center bearing and checked for free movement. Perfect fit, no binding!
