Brief Description:  Construction of Nosebowl Locater

Critical to building the cowling using the generic nosebowl from FlyCorvair.com and the Van's 13"" spinner is a plywood fixture that attaches the loose nosebowl tio the prop hub on the front of the engine. The nosebowl needs to be 7/8"" aft of the prop hub face so the fixture is made from a single piece of 1/2"" plywood that will bolt to the prop hub. Behind that and fitting over the prop hub is a spacer made from a single piece of 1/2"" plywood and two pieces of 3/16"" hardboard, all readily available at the local hardware store in the Aviation department. These pieces are all 14"" square and will eventually be cut down to a 13"" diameter circle. The pieces must be capable of maintaining alignment throughout the construction so after their faces are clearly marked (away from the center which will be removed) a master hole is drilled through the center of all four pieces and they are temporarly attached with a #8 screw through that hole. From the center hole a circle of 11"" diameter is drawn and three small holes are drilled through all four pieces evenly spaced along that circumfrence. The holes should accept #8 screws and will allow the pieces to be returned to their original alignment throughout the construction.

1) The pieces have been rough cut to a square shape and the top piece has had the center marked. This center point will be the reference for all other holes and cuts. The cowl needs to be 7/8"" behing the hub face and there is no common material available in that thickness so that section is built up from 1/2"" plywood and two layers of 3/16"" masonite hardboard.

2) All the holes have been drilled and the piece is ready to be cut to final diamter (outer circle) and then have the layers glued togater. The three holes drilled into the 11"" ring (green inner circle) allow for the layers to be taken apart and then put back togather exactly as it started. Without those locaters the center point could drift and cause a difficult fit over the prop hub. If you have the spinner forward bulkhead sold b
