Brief Description:  Design of the Firewall Forward Installation #1

1) This figure shows the dimensions and mounting hole placement for the firewall

2) This figure illustrates the current design for the firewall component layout. This is what the mockup is all about, trying the deign out before any holes get cut/drilled into the real firewall. The Andair Gasocolator at the lower left provides 70 micron filtering of the fuel plus a place for water and other contaminants to settle out and be drained from the system. A somewhat larger 100 micron inline filter was provided with the fuel injection system components and it might be included if needed for extra filtering. With a fiberglass tank good filtering is essential and the last component in the fuel lines sitting just above the gasocolator is the final filter, colored silver, which covers particles down to 10 microns. In between the two filters are the dual boost pumps that are essential to a fuel injection system. They incorporate one way valves so fuel cannot be forced backwards through a non operating pump. To the upper right is the air/oil separator that WW recomends for the Corvair installation in the Zenith install guide. The vertical aluminum tube on its left provides the overboard vent for the separater. Over on the right side of the drawing is the remote mounted oil cooler with the upper shroud that feeds cooling air through a section of 2 1/2"" SCAT tubing. The last major component is a three way manifold in the upper center that connects the engine to various sensers that could be damaged by the vibration of a direct connection. The manifold is a Vans Aircraft product and very usuful. On the left is the oil pressure sensor and Nason switch used to shutdown the primary fuel pump if the engine is stopped. In the middle is the fuel pressure sensor and to the right is the manifold pressure sensor.

3) This photo shows a trial fitting of the engine to the FWF mockup and illustrates the amount of clearance that is available for the intake manifold and rear mounted alternator.
