Brief Description:  Pushrod Tube Painting

Because of the close proximity of the Pushrod Tubes to the Exhaust stacks in the Corvair engine the common wisdom is to coat them with some form of heat barrier. This should be a bright white to prevent transfer of exhaust heat to the pushrod tubes and hence the engine itself. My choice was VHT Flameproof paint, one coat of flat white primer and three coats of flat wite paint (no gloss types are available). These tubes are the aftermarket Aluminum variety, not the stock steel units. After a good cleaning inside and out with MEK, I used Scotch Blue Painters tape to mask off the ends where the o-ring seals are placed and close the end off to keep out overspray. I then put a series of 3": drywall screws into a piece of 1x4 board in two staggered rows. If I was to do it again I would have done this in a single row and used a longer board. To get the best coverage I wore a latex glove on one hand so I could rotate the tubes as I applied paint in vertical passes until all sides were coated. After they were completely dried I removed the tape carefully as the paint seemed soft and fragile although fully dried. They then went into my toaster oven in two batches to be cured per the directions that come with the paint. It starts at 260 degrees for 30 minutes, 400 degrees for 30 minutes and then 600 degrees (or as high as the oven went) for another 30 minutes. Between each heat level there was 30 miutes of air cooling. In the end the paint color was slightly darker and it had a harder, more permanent feel to it. The good part was there was no noticable smell and the oven was still fit for cooking food when I was done.
