Brief Description:  Install Throttle Cable

1600 - 1918

Install throttle cable.

I needed to fabricate a support bracket for the throttle cable at the throttle body end. I am using the throttle arm clocked to the bottom of the engine. I was able to use the tapped mounting holes in the sides of the induction plenum as mounting points.

I needed to remove the throttle butterfly arm as the cable mount hole needed to be relocated. In the stock configuration, a little over 3" of travel would be needed from the control cable. This was not possible, as the cable and the quadrant were designed for a maximum travel of 2 1/8". With a bit of simple math, the arm length was calculated and confirmed. The arm was then drilled in the new location and deburred. The arm was reinstalled and connected to the cable to verify correct operation and full range of motion. The final distance from the CENTER OF THE PIVOT SHAFT is 1 1/2".

Standard techniques were employed in the fabrication of these parts.

I used a section of the 063 angle that Van used to support the lower instrument panel for the brackets. These were connected by a length of 080 2024 sheet, sheared to 2 1/2" wide.

I used a piece of 2024 1 x 1 angle for the cable mount.

All parts were clamped together to veryify fit. This involve several iterations to find the optimum tangent to the thottle butterfly pivot. Once this position was located, all pieces were marked, clamped, and removed.

Brackets and angle were then match drilled to the sheet.

All parts were disassembled, deburred, and smoothed.

Once all parts were finalized, they were primed and painted.
