Brief Description:  Fabricate and Replace Elevator Stops

1300 - 1436 1700 - 1800

Remove rudder.

Remove vertical stab.

Drill and remove 3 AN470 rivets for elevator up stop.

Remove AN3 bolts from elevator up stop.

Fabricate new elevaotr up stop based on control stick base interference.

Cleco up stop in position, verify fit and interference. No interference noted with new stop in place.

Verify elevator up travel. Noted 28 degrees up travel now available. According to Van's, up elevator range is 25 - 30 degrees.

Fabricate elevator down stop. It was noted that the elevator aft pushrod was interfering with the aft elevator bellcrank at the maximum travel of 25 degrees. A new down stop was fabricated from 3/4 x 3/4 x .125 angle and fitted to the center hinge bearing mount using an AN3-6A bolt. The stop was then trimmed to provide 23.5 degrees maximum down elevator. Once again, according to Van's, the down elevator travel should be between 20 and 25 degrees.

Note that the specs in section 12 of the plans specify only the maximum travel and not the recommended range. As I found, there were minor binding issues at the extreme ends of the travel range.

Debur and smooth all edges using s/b wheel.

Clean and prime both stops.

Bolt down stop to bearing mount.

Bolt and rivet up stop to tailcone using specified hardware and p-squeezer.
