Brief Description:  Modify Cowl

1600 - 1824 1900 - 2036

Today, I finalized the locations of the skybolt flanges within the previously fabricated channel. I attached the skybolt recetacles to two of the flanges and secured them to the cowl channel with tape. The cowl was installed and the receptacle locations were checked for interference on the intake plenum. There was no interference. The cowl was removed.

Next, I positioned reference marks within the channel for the split line and rivet line. The receptacle flange that would cause interfence was matched drill to the cowl channel in the verified location. From this starting point, the remaining flanges were located. A 1" rivet spacing was detemined to be optimum. The rivet locations were marked and drilled in the cowl using a #40 drill.

The skybolt flanges were then matched drilled, one at a time and clecoed in position. The forward and aft flanges were modified to fit by removing the unnecessary flange material.

Once the flanges were clecoed in place, the location of the holes for the receptacles were located using the machined cleco clamps that were provided by skybolt. A center hole was drilled with a #30 drill.

The flanges were then removed and deburred.

The rivet holes in the cowl were machine countersunk for flush rivets.

I decided to add two more fasteners to the platypus bill to secure the cowl edges. The location of these fasteners was determined and match drilled as previously detailed.
